History of Jim Beam Bourbon

Provided by James B. Beam Distilling Company The birth of bourbon. Settlers in Kentucky distill corn whiskey and age it in charred oak barrels to give it's rich, smoky flavor and distinctive amber color.

Jacob Beam, farmer and grain-mill operator, sells his first barrel of "Old Jake Beam Sour Mash." Friends and family call it a "fine dram." Jacob's son, David Beam, takes over as Master Distiller. He produces the family's increasingly famous bourbon whiskey for 30 years. The opening of the Erie Canal. Shipping goods is easier and more accessible than ever.

David Beam retires, leaving his son, David M. Beam, grandson of Jacob, in charge.

The national pace of business jumps yet again as six Eastern railroads, including the Baltimore & Ohio and the Pennsylvania, punch through the Appalachian Mountains.

David M. Beam moves the distillery to Nelson County, Kentucky, to be near a railroad.

James Beauregard Beam, the third son of David M., becomes the new head of the family business. He is a straightforward man who prefers simple to fancy, and he insists on being called "Jim."

Prohibition begins. Jim Beam leaves the distilling business to grow citrus in Florida, then takes up coal mining and later runs a limestone quarry. Prohibition marks the only time from 1795 to the present day that the Beams do not distill whiskey.

Prohibition is repealed.

Jim Beam, who is now 70, rebuilds the family's distillery, by hand, in just 120 days.

Jim Beam is so dedicated to protecting the family recipe that he seals a portion of the yeast culture in a jar and takes it home with him every weekend. Just in case.

Jim Beam's son, T. Jeremiah Beam, becomes president and treasurer of the James B. Beam Distilling Company.p> Jim Beam's grandson, F. Booker Noe, Jr. is brought into the business at age 21. Booker is the great-great-great grandson of Jacob Beam.

The company opens a second distillery near Boston, Kentucky.

Booker Noe is named Master Distiller Emeritus. He's one of at least 30 master distillers and distillers descended from Jacob Beam who have worked in the American distilling industry.

Congress declares bourbon to be the "official native spirit" of the United States. The company fills its 9-millionth barrel.

JOHN WALKER - THE FOUNDING GENIUS 1805 - 1857

This is the man who started it all, and whose modest beginnings clearly fostered an ambitious nature.

John was born a farmer's son, but when his father died he seized the opportunity to leave the land and set himself up in business in the nearby town. At the age of 15 he was already the proprietor of a small grocery shop in Kilmarnock, the start of what would later become an international business empire.

Defining Steps in John Walker's life

In 1820,at the age of 15, John opened a grocery business in Kilmarnock John applies tea blending principles to whisky with great success Walker's Highland Whiskies are created and launched to much acclaim The business prospers and John's reputation as an expert blender spreads throughout the West of Scotland.

The 1852 Kilmarnock flood devastates the town and threatens to destroy John's business, but with the strength of his reputation and the loyalty of his consumers, John rebuilds his business. John dies in 1857 and leadership passes to his son Alexander. John Walker as whisky's saviour?

Some say that if John Walker and others like him had not started blending malt and grain whisky, the drink itself may never have become as popular as it has.

200 years ago, single malts were not appreciated the way they are now - they were too oily and heavy for many people's tastes. Without the introduction of the smoother and more balanced blend, whisky might never have left the remote highlands and islands of Scotland - and what a tragedy that would have been.

ALEXANDER WALKER (I) - INNOVATOR AND VISIONARY 1837 - 1889

Alexander was completely single minded in his approach to business. He wanted his whisky to be the best.

He inherited his father's talent for blending, but brought his own flair and vision to the business too. As the British Empire expanded, Alexander made sure his whisky travelled with it, and later planned the conversion of John Walker & Sons to a limited liability business.

Defining steps in Alexander Walker's Life

Alexander starts exporting whisky to the emerging British colony of Australia and then throughout the British Empire. He becomes an expert blender and in 1867 perfects and copyrights Old Highland Whisky, the forerunner of today's Black Label? Scotch Whisky.

Alexander also introduces the black and gold slanting label and the revolutionary new square bottle design In 1880 Old Highland Whisky wins the first special award for blended whisky at the Sydney International Exhibition

In 1889 Alexander dies, leaving the business in the hands of his sons, George Paterson Walker and Alexander Walker II.

GEORGE PATERSON WALKER - Marketing Guru 1864 - 1926

George inherited his father's intuitive flair for marketing and masterminded the introduction of the Striding Man to support the launch of Red Label? and Black Label? in 1909.

The Striding Man

He's changed his clothes occasionally over the years, teamed up with all sorts of people and adopted a number of different positions - but he's still basically the same.

George wanted to create an advertising device that would epitomise the pioneering spirit of his family and become instantly recognisable to his consumers around the world.

The solution emerged during lunch one day with the well-known cartoonist of the time, Tom Browne. In response to the challenge, Browne drew the first Striding Man then and there on the back of a menu in the restaurant.

The words 'Born 1820, still going strong' were quickly added and advertising history was made.

After their father's death, Alexander steps into the blending role, and George picks up responsibility for marketing and distribution 1909 marks the introduction of Red Label? and Black Label? , along with the Striding Man logo.

The company copes with the aftermath of the First Wold War in 1920 In the same year, Sir Alexander is knighted and Red Label? reaches 120 countries.

SIR ALEXANDER WALKER (II) - COLOSSUS OF THE WHISKY INDUSTRY 1869 - 1950

Sir Alexander was the man that developed Red Label? - and for that alone he deserved his knighthood.

But he wasn't just a great blender; he was an astute businessman and a forceful spokesman for the industry as a whole, and that's why he became known as the 'Colossus of the Whisky Industry'.

A Little History About Makers Mark Whiskey

1840 T.W. Samuels It wasn?t until 1840 that the Samuels family got serious about whisky distilling. And thats when Roberts grandson, T.W. Samuels, built the familys first commercial distillery at Samuels Depot, Kentucky. He was known as the "High" Sheriff of Nelson County. The "secret" family recipe was passed from generation to generation, six to be exact.

1865 When the Civil War was supposedly over, William Clark Quantrill's band of Confederate irregulars, including Jesse and Frank James, had other ideas. They continued to attack Union sympathizers throughout central Kentucky. Eventually, Quantrill was shot and his irregulars were chased to the hamlet of Samuels, KY, and took refuge at the home of T.W. Samuels, Jesse and Frank's stepfather.

1920 The 1920's brought American Prohibition and distilleries were shut down. Luckily for us, Prohibition ended in 1934.

1943 Bill Samuels, Sr. decided to create a distinguished style of bourbon whisky. So he left the T.W. Samuels Distillery and began his new venture by burning the 170-year-old family recipe.

1951 Bill Samuels, Sr. developed a new recipe based on locally grown maize (corn) and malted barley coupled with gentle winter wheat not the traditional and harsher grain, rye. Funny enough, he did this without a distillery. He baked bread in the family kitchen, experimenting with different grains to come to this conclusion.

1952 Marge Samuels (wife of Bill, Sr.), designed the bottle and named the whisky. As a fine pewter collector, she had always searched for the mark of the maker. She was also a collector of bottles of cognac, many of which were sealed in colorful wax. It was these two things that lent themselves to the Makers Mark packaging still used today.

1958 The first bottle of Maker's Mark was dipped, sealed and introduced at $7 a bottle.

1965 The first outdoor billboard appeared.

1968 The first magazine ad.

1975 The first newspaper ad.

1975 Bill Samuels, Jr. became the president and CEO of Maker's Mark.

1980 The Makers Mark distillery in Loretto, KY was declared a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Cecil Andrus.

1980 In August of 1980, The Wall Street Journal published a front page article about Makers Mark - its distinctive and gentle taste and how this undiscovered secret was produced in the little town of Loretto, KY. Letters started coming in to Makers Mark by the thousands.

1981 In early 1981, so many letters were received asking where to find Makers Mark that an ad was placed in The Wall Street Journal thanking consumers for their interest and sending them to their retailers to order Makers Mark.

1981 From 1981 to 1995, an ad campaign was developed based on letters and stories from faithful consumers. The style was letter writing with a sense of humor which would, hopefully, bring a smile to the readers.

1993 The ad campaign took on a new look and feel.

1997 The ?letter writing? style of advertising returned. After receiving letters from consumers about how much they liked the old advertising, new ads were created in that style once again.

2000 Due to the increased popularity of Makers Mark, the distillery was forced to expand in 2000 and 2001, duplicating, in exact detail, the distillery as it had been restored in the 60s. This doubled the capacity to make whisky.

The style is believed to have originated in pubs in Britain and Ireland with drinkers ordering a mix of dark stout and draught bitter. The name is first recorded in 1889 [citation needed], though an earlier origin of an 18th century blend of porter and pale ale has been conjectured. Several American breweries currently make premixed Black and Tan, and it is a popular blend at American bars. One of the oldest and best known commercial examples is Yuengling's Original Black and Tan. However, it is not made in Irish or British breweries, and requesting the drink in pubs may be greeted with a certain degree of puzzlement as Guinness is not usually mixed with other beers or ales.

The name "black and tan" had earlier been applied to dogs, such as the black and tan coon-hound. It was later used as a nickname for the Black and Tans paramilitary reserve during the Irish War of Independence. In March of 2006, Ben and Jerry's released an ice cream flavor in the United States for Saint Patrick's Day inspired by the drink; the name offended Irish nationalists because of the paramilitary association. Ben and Jerry's has since apologized. A spokesman told Reuters, "Any reference on our part to the British Army unit was absolutely unintentional and no ill-will was ever intended."

The two most common types of Black and Tan in the United States use Guinness Draught (not Extra Stout) and either Bass, or Harp Lager. The Guinness is "layered" on top of the ale, taking advantage of the fact that Guinness is carbonated (nitrogenated) with a (lighter gas) mixture of nitrogen (N2 28g/mole) and carbon dioxide (CO2 44g/mole), versus Bass being carbonated with only CO2. The Matt Brewing Company of Utica, NY, produces under their Saranac brand a bottled Black and Tan, which is a blend of stout and pale lager (according to their website). Also in Utica, the Mississippi Brewing Company sells a bottled Black and Tan as well, called "Mississippi Mud", which is a blend of "robust English Porter" and "fine Continental Pilsner" (according to the label).

A Black-and-Tan SpoonTo prepare a Black and Tan in the American way, first fill a glass halfway with the ale, then add the Guinness Draught (from the can, bottle, or tap). The top layer is best poured slowly over an upside-down tablespoon placed over the glass to avoid splashing and mixing the layers. A specially designed black-and-tan spoon is bent in the middle so that it can balance on the edge of the pint-glass for easier pouring.

In the United Kingdom, another way of preparing a Black and Tan is to pour half a pint of dark stout into a pint glass and then top up with draught bitter, so that both beers are thoroughly mixed together.

In the Republic of Ireland a Black and Tan is normally made from a half pint of Smithwick's topped off with Guinness. During the summer months, and some time for variety, stout drinkers may order a black and tan due to its lighter texture. Likewise ale drinkers may order a Smithwick's with a Guinness head. This is an ordinary pint of Smithwick's with the last inch or so topped off with Guinness.

In Australia, specifically New South Wales, a Black and Tan is made from half a schooner (425ml) of Tooheys New (a pale lager) and then topped up with Tooheys Old (a dark ale)
